Religious Education

The Importance of Religious Education

Religious education provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. It develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions, other religious traditions and other world views that offer answers to questions such as these. It offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development. It enhances pupils’ awareness and understanding of religions and beliefs, teachings, practices and forms of expression, as well as of the influence of religion on individuals, families, communities and cultures.

Religious Education at St. Michael’s

As a church school, RE is inspired by the Church of England vision for education that encompasses four basic elements:

Wisdom – Educating for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills

Hope – Educating for Hope and Aspiration

Community – Educating for Community and Living Well Together

Dignity – Educating for Dignity and Respect

Our RE curriculum is informed by the aspirational Essex Agreed Syllabus 2022. The intent is for a cohesive and progressive learning journey across the key stages. It is designed to support pupils in developing their understanding of the diversity within faiths and worldviews with the intent of developing their ‘Religious Literacy’ so that our children are prepared for life in an ever changing multi-cultural society.

RE is a multi-disciplinary subject. Our RE curriculum has an enquiry based approach enabling children to see religion and worldviews through theological, philosophical and human and social lenses. As a Church school, the study of Christianity will exceed 50% of curriculum time. In addition, children will also study two other religions in depth. An Abrahamic religion – Islam and a Dharmic religion – Hindu Dharma which considers our local context and prepares our pupils to flourish in their community and for a life in an increasingly diverse Britain.
