This term, our science lessons have been about ‘Light’. We last learned about Light in Year 3, so we were able to build on our knowledge.
Light travels in straight lines from a light source into our eyes. Along the way, it reflects off of objects around us, which enables us to see them. Light cannot travel through opaque objects; this is how shadows are formed – an opaque object blocks the light.
We used our knowledge of how light travels to investigate whether we could read secret messages written on Post-It notes that had been hidden out of our usual line of sight (like underneath a table, or stuck onto our backs!).
We are just coming to the end of our maths unit on Area, Perimeter and Volume. The perimeter of a shape is the distance around the outside, while the area is the space within a 2D shape. We measure perimeter in usual units of measure, but area is measured in squared units (e.g. cm², m², km², etc.).
It’s easy to find the area of a rectangle or parallelogram – you just have to multiply the base by the height. However, it’s a bit trickier to find the area of rectilinear shapes (two or more rectangles joined together) as there are often missing lengths and we have to be maths detectives to find the measurement of the unknown sides.
