We are proud to be a ‘sister’ school to Njarange Primary and Junior Secondary school in Ishiara, Kenya.
In October 2023, Mrs Stevens visited this school and spent a week teaching the children and participating in Enrichment activities with the varied age groups.
In preparation for this visit, the children, who had previously spoken live to the children in Njarange school, were introduced to the project (action plan) that the school would be involved in and Club Kenya was born. We were passionate about creating a piece of work that could be replicated in both schools and Mrs Stevens came up with the brilliant idea of using the children’s fingerprints (as we had previously done as part of our Right’s Respecting school project) to create a fingerprint canvas that all of the children at St Michael’s could participate in. This was then carefully rolled and taken, with Mrs Stevens to Kenya. To our delight, our sister school had done the same and we now hang their fingerprint canvas just inside the school entrance.
Our project was named ‘St Michael’s Christian vision is Kenya’ and was focussed on ‘Sustainable Flourishing’. ‘Flourishing by God’s Love’ is integral to our school vision.
The sustainable project that was to enable the children, who attended the Njarange school, to be involved in a scheme linked to outdoor learning. We provided the school with several tree hydration bags that would provide a slow-release stream of water to newly planted trees. The bags were zipped around the newly planted trees, so staking wasn’t necessary. Each bag held up to 70 litres of water, which released water very slowly over 3-5 hours, reducing the necessity to water the trees more often than every 3-5 days. We thought this would be perfect in such a hot, dry climate with water restrictions.
